Different people have a different opinion about a certain topic, and so does the creator of Game of Thrones in relation to the controversial rape scene happening to Sansa in her wedding night. Some fans and viewers may be disgusted with what happened to one of the main characters, but George R.R. Martin has something to say about it.

Keep in mind that some of the things discussed here may contain spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the whole season or some of the episodes from Game of Throne season 5, it is advisable that you stop reading and read no further.

As if the plots and storylines of Game of Thrones hadn’t experienced drastic turns and changes, the story makes the show decided to amp up the notch – creating controversy with Sansa’s brutal wedding night when she was raped by her husband and the whole process was being watched by her childhood friend, Theon/Reek. This has created a controversy with very few people stating positive things about the show. Most of the viewers are shocked, disgusted, and even decide to not watching the show anymore.

Complaints are flying around to HBO, including to the book creator, George R.R. Martin. Martin seems to take HBO’s side and tries to explain what happens from his own point of view. Aside from the fact that Martin understands the producers’ decision, he also understand the effect of the changes of what happens to the original story from the book. He ‘defends’ the producers for doing what they have to do. Most complaints are about the unfortunate things happening to Sansa, the character they love.

Martin explained that it is understandable that things are different from the book and the show. He took the example of Gone with the Wind, with Scarlett O’Hara as the main character. She has three kids in the novel, but only one in the movie. In real life, none because she’s not real; she’s only a fictional character. The same thing goes with Game of Thrones where things may be different from the show and the story although they are sharing the same story. Just FYI, the same thing also happens to ‘the Walking Dead’ where the plots on the show are different from the comics.

Back to the main topic, Martin admitted that changes that are happening from season 1 have started to show their butterfly effect and it is understandable that the producers have to do what they have to do to keep on the show going on. In fact, it would be weird if they remain loyal to the original story from the book after all the changes they have done. After all, Martin himself admitted that the story in his book is truly complex and lengthy, and so far, Dan Weiss, David Benioff, and Bryan Cogman have done very good job in keeping the show running.

Martin finalized his words by saying that the show and the book are like two different paths that will reach at the same end, so viewers just have to sit back and just enjoy the journeys.
