Time for Arya Stark: Surprises and Secrets in Season 5
Arya Stark may be the character that is going through similar routine, actions, and scenes – which can be pretty boring for viewers – but things are about to change in Game of Thrones season 5. After doing the same routine for several episodes and wearing the same clothes for several seasons, there is a promising act that Arya will experience something different – in a drastic way.
If you are going to read along, make sure that you have watched this season 5; otherwise, there are some spoilers that you may not like. Read further after this warning and bear your own risks – you’ve been warned.
Maisie Williams, the artist playing Arya, says that she is pretty excited about the changes happening to her character – so we can assume that Arya is going to experience something good; not bad, horrifying, or traumatic. So far, her scenes are shot indoor, displaying the setting of House of Black and White in her Braavos training process. Arya is often portrayed sweeping the floor in the poorly dimmed setting, wearing rags – which she has been wearing for the last seasons – and that’s about it. Williams claim that she will soon get a new costume – which is newer and far better than the rags – not to mention that her character will experience something drastic.
The only thing Williams regret about the changes is that she has to be more careful now in handling her costume. She is used to not really care about the costume, slouching and sitting on the floor, and now she has to be more careful when she gets the new costume.
In the previous episodes, you see how Arya left her home and her possessions, and only carry one item – the Needle, a sword that Jon Snow (her half brother) gave to her. With her training and her attempts to become a good student for Faceless Men, Arya is not sure where Faith has brought her to – for now, she is only sure that Braavos is her new path. With Arya as the center of the plot, she meets again with Jaqen H’ghar (played by Tom Wlaschiha), an assassin who helps her escape Harrenhal. Arya met Jaqen in the previous season 2, and it seems that D.B. Weiss and David Benioff think that this is the perfect time for them to meet again.
In this season 5, Jaqen is definitely chosen to be Arya’s teacher. Things can be a bit complicated as Jaqen himself has this little magician thing and he certainly has his own secrets, so it is quite understandable that Arya doesn’t understand things at first. But patience is a virtue and Arya will be rewarded for her patience all these long. After all, she has gone through a lot, but the world doesn’t stop there for her – she will face new challenges as well as meeting new people. Williams think that everything will be important for her character’s development, and although viewers may not see her as the same Arya they used to know, they will understand the transformation and like her for the new her.
